Floods in Bosnia Herzegovina: the Italian Development Cooperation supports local communities

Sarajevo, October 17, 2024_Terrible floods affected Bosnia Herzegovina at the beginning of this October, killing 27 people and causing several damages to infrastructures, transportations and facilities in the areas of Jablanica, Konjic, Kiseljak, Kreševo, Fojnica, Drvar, Breza and Vareš, with thousands of Internal Displaced People and a declaration of Emergency from local authorities.

An international mobilization followed and the Italian Development Cooperation decided to be part of it, assigning part of the funds allocated for the project “Bosnia and Herzegovina: Strengthening local capacities for disaster preparedness and response“, implemented by IOM – International Organization for Migrations with the specific aim to better prepare local communities and authorities in case of natural disasters or caused by humans. Please find on AICS Tirana website an IOM factsheet for a full picture of the disaster and the support delivered thanks to Italian funds.

Among its priority sectors, AICS Tirana includes DRR – Disaster Risk Reduction through this project and a technical support to the Albanian Civil Protection Agency, in partnership with the Italian Civil Protection. The Italian commitment for the disaster risk reduction in the Western Balkans will increase on a regional level thanks to a new project including also Serbia and North Macedonia next year.
