AICS Tirana enhances albanian cultural heritage in the Archaeological Parks of Bylis and Klos

On 20 September 2024, the “Bylis” project (“EU for Economic Development initiative, Tourism-led Local Economic Development, with a Focus on Cultural Heritage“) held its inaugural Steering Committee meeting. The project is funded by the European Union and implemented by AICS Tirana Regional Office, with a 6 million euro investment, alongside a 250,000 euro contribution from Italian Government.

This important initiative focuses on the valorization of Albania’s cultural heritage, with plans to preserve and valorize the archaeological sites of Bylis and Klos, located in the Mallakastra Region. Key activities include the construction of a visitor center and museum, improved accessibility to the sites, and training programs for students and experts. The project also aims to promote the two ancient sites as tourist destinations, both locally and internationally, offering a significant opportunity to boost the region’s economy through the engagement of local communities.

The Albanian Ministry of Economy, Culture, and Innovation is the main beneficiary of the project. Deputy Minister Lira Pipa attended the meeting and signed the new work plan, which was presented by Stefania Vizzaccaro, Head of AICS Tirana Office, and co-signed by Hubert Perr, Representative of the EU Delegation.

Other notable participants included Ms. Eridana Cano, Director of the State Agency for Strategic Planning and Assistance Coordination (SASPAC), who attended as an observer, alongside Mr. Qerim Ismailaj, Mayor of Mallakastra, academics Mr. Gëzim Hoxha and Mr. Adem Bunguri from the Academy of Sciences of Albania and the Institute of Archaeology and the Director of the Archaeological Park of Apollonia and Bylis Ms. Ornela Dyrmishi.
